"Priority" calls in major review
Words by Nick Crockford

Road projects and public transport in the Moreton Bay region must be “prioritised” in a high-profile review, says Mayor Peter Flannery.

Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre (MBISC) should also stay in the 100 Day Review into Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games infrastructure and planning.

Mayor Flannery said he would be disappointed if the commitment to critical connectivity and infrastructure did not remain a priority.

“It was the SEQ Council of Mayors who started the bid for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, looking to leverage commitments to better road and transport infrastructure for all communities across SEQ,” he said.

“I urge those reviewing our submission to prioritise key public transport and road projects in our City such as the Bruce Highway Western Alternative and bridges at the Pine River Crossing.

"And make good on previous commitments to enable additional connections and mobility across the South East.

“This will alleviate gridlock during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while also reducing congestion on the Bruce Highway.

“Integrated public transport should be an urgent focus to ensure effective movement during 2032, while meeting the long-term needs of our growing population.”

The Mayor added building MBISC at The Mill is a “no-brainer” being centrally located, shovel ready and with “dedicated rail connections".

It will "provide long lasting benefits to our city, accommodating community and event use that will create a legacy residents can be proud of," he said.

“As a trusted delivery partner, I’d also draw attention to how eager we are to discuss additional event hosting opportunities across our City."

Mayor Flannery said it's “pleasing” to see Queensland State Equestrian Centre in Caboolture as a possible venue in ex-Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk's review.

“I have been vocal about the legacy Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring and am committed to ensuring we get our fair share,” the Mayor said.

“City of Moreton Bay is in the box seat to capitalise from the benefits associated with hosting the world’s largest sporting event.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with my Council peers alongside the State and Federal Governments to make this a reality.”
