Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day tomorrow aims to raise money for patient care projects, life-changing health research and other hospital initiatives, with a focus on transforming the palliative care unit.
A full program of community fundraising events will be held on Thursday, October 12, with every donation doubled by Giving Day Impact Partners. Donate via the website or phone 1300 363 786.
Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day is the main event for Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital, a partnership between the RBWH Foundation and Redcliffe Hospital.
RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske says the main goal of this year’s appeal is to add a ‘touch of home’ to the Palliative Care Unit by renovating the lounge room and courtyard.
“Every year, about 600 patients are cared for in the Palliative Care Unit,” Simone says.
“The unit provides a welcoming refuge when patients are unable to be cared for at home and visits by family and friends are really important.
“We would love to enhance that experience by providing a fresh new look in the common areas.”
More than $500,000 has been raised for Redcliffe Hospital during the past two years, funding patient care initiatives and health research projects including:
• Renovation of common areas in the hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit, creating a warm and inviting environment for patients and visitors
• Two inaugural research fellows: Prostate cancer – using fused images and 3D anatomical models of prostate cancer tumours to guide surgeons and educate patients with urological cancer; and enhanced recovery after surgery – recruiting GPs and community services to help patients reduce smoking and alcohol consumption, and improve nutrition and iron deficiency (anaemia) ahead of planned surgeries.
• Wishlist grants, such as a distraction activity trolley for the paediatric unit, portable radios with headsets for elderly patients, and breast pumps for new mothers.
The main Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day activity will be a radiothon hosted by 99.7 Bridge FM at the corner of Anzac and Oxley avenues. There will be a classic car show, concert, prize wheel and community barbecue.
