On The Way Moreton Bay's free community soup kitchen, launched just four weeks ago, is already getting more than 50 people at its weekly sessions.
President and CEO Rozz Nuttall says volunteers see 40-55 people walk through the doors of John Neumann Hall, Deception Bay Rd, each Tuesday (4.30-6.30pm).
They come from Deception Bay, Redcliffe and Caboolture showing “the real struggles facing our community”, says Rozz.
Among them were a mum and baby forced to couch surf. On The Way Moreton Bay has helped find temporary accommodation for the pair.
A man living with diabetes, unable to manage his health while homeless and those - housed and unhoused - struggling with mental health.
Also, survivors of domestic violence unable find a safe place and addicts ready for rehab but unable to find detox beds.
Rozz says there are also financially struggling families, pensioners and people who cannot afford rent, food, fuel or bills.
“People carry trauma, pain and untreated mental health issues that drive them to cope in the only ways they know how,” Rozz said.
“Addiction is not a choice, it is a response to suffering and without proper support, the cycle continues.
“Others are crushed by the rising cost of living. Hunger, poverty, and financial stress are forcing people who never thought they would need help to turn to us.
“Our weekly community dinners are more than meals they are connection, hope, and dignity.”
On The Way Moreton Bay, founded by Rozz and Nancy Chard, receives donations of food and goods but “wants to do more” including:
- Provide emergency hampers, fuel cards and medication support
- Offer referrals and advocacy
- Extend soup kitchens to reach more people in need
- Establish a local detox facility and break the cycle of addiction and violence
“But we cannot do this alone,” she said, “with support through donations, sponsorships, partnerships or advocacy we can continue to bring safety, hope and change.”
“Together we can fix the core issues. Together we can give people not just survival, but a real chance.”
