Registrations open for Christmas hampers
Words by Ashleigh Howarth

Families and individuals from the Redcliffe Peninsula who are struggling to make ends meet can now register their details to receive a food hamper this Christmas.

The hampers will be put together by members of the Redcliffe Community Care Network, which is made up of several services including The Breakfast Club, The Salvation Army, Encircle, Redcliffe Uniting Church, City of Moreton Bay, Band of Brothers, Redcliffe Mums Inc, Emerge Church and Peace Christian Church.

The hampers will be distributed through the Community Christmas Appeal and will ensure people in need will have food to eat on Christmas Day and the days following when services are shut.

Michelle Gilchrist from The Breakfast Club says people can register anytime between now and December 14.

“People can now register their details online via the links on the Redcliffe Community Care Network Facebook page,” Michelle says.

“There is one link for singles and couples, and a separate link for families.

“It’s important that you click on the right link so we can ensure you get the right hamper.

“If you don’t know how to register, or you don’t have a device, you can call us or drop into The Breakfast Club and we can assist you.

“We don’t want anyone to miss out during the Christmas period, so if you are in doubt, please reach out.

“People can register their details anytime between now and December 14.

“The hampers will then go out on December 18 and 19.”

To be eligible, families and individuals must reside either on the Redcliffe Peninsula or at Rothwell, with one hamper given per household/address.

To register, visit the Redcliffe Community Care Network Facebook page, or phone The Breakfast Club on 0467 811 380 for assistance.

Call for more donations

To help with the high number of people needing assistance, Michelle is calling on local businesses, schools and sporting clubs to come on board to donate food and gifts.

Non-perishable items that can be donated include tinned stews and soup, tinned fruit and vegetables, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, long life milk, long life custard, spreads like Vegemite, peanut butter and jam, pancake mix, cake mixes, jellies, cordial, biscuits, soft drinks, nuts, lollies, chips and mince puddings.

In addition to food items, people can also choose to donate toys, games and books that will be given to children who might otherwise have nothing to open on Christmas Day.

Donations are needed for both boys and girls aged from babies up to 18 years of age.

Food donations can be dropped off at The Breakfast Club (34 Cornelius St, Clontarf) every Tuesday and Thursday between 9am-1.30pm, as well on Sundays from 3-5pm.

Toy donations can be taken to The Salvation Army (64-72 Ashmole Rd, Kippa-Ring) every Tuesday and Friday between 9am-12pm.

All donations need to be dropped off before Wednesday, December 13.

Free Christmas breakfast

The dedicated volunteers from The Breakfast Club will also be getting up nice and early on Christmas Day to prepare a delicious breakfast for people in need at the Clontarf Community Hall in Cornelius St.

“The breakfast will be held from 7am with the option to either sit down and enjoy a meal with us or take away,” Michelle says.

“We would like as many people as possible to come and join us because nobody should be alone on Christmas Day.”
