Snap three-day lockdown from 4pm

Posted: 10am 31 Jul 2021

Moreton Bay Region is one of 11 council areas going into a snap three-day lockdown from 4pm today.

It comes as Deputy Premier Steven Miles announced seven new cases in Queensland in the last 24 hours.

Significantly they are the Delta strain, which is currently behind the outbreak which has forced Sydney into a long lockdown.

Family in quarantine

Five of the cases are family members in the same household as the 17-year-old Indooroopilly State High School girl who is believed to have been infectious since July 27.

The Deputy Premier said it was essential to go "hard and go early" to tackle the more infectious Delta strain.

He urged residents to stay at home or go home as early as possible today saying we cannot "be complacent".

'Go hard go early'

"We all have to comply with the restrictions," he said, "with the Deltra strain, go hard and go early."

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said five members of the household of the Indooroopilly student have the Delta strain.

All members of staff and students at the school are now in 14 days of quarantine.

"For the next three days I urge everyone to stay at home," said Dr Young.

The 11 LGAs are:

Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Noosa, Somerset, Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim.

The only reasons to leave your home will be to:

1. To buy essentials such as groceries or medications

2. Work or study if you can’t do either from home, no school unless children of essential workers
3. Exercise within 10km of your home

4. Healthcare or to provide help, care or support.

Masks to be worn

Schools and child care centres will only be open to essential workers or vulnerable families. Masks will be worn by children and teachers.

Funerals and weddings will be restricted to 10 people. Non-essential businesses will close, pubs, clubs and cafes will only service takeaway food.

Sports clubs in the region have immediately cancelled all games which had not already started today, following the lockdown announcement.

Football Queensland has said, following the lockdown announcement, all football in South East Queensland was suspended until 11.59pm on Tuesday August 9.

The lockdown applies to anyone who has been in the 11 LGAs since 1am today.
