The Nest Community: Connection through craft
Words by Nadia Chapman

An inspiring self-funded and women-led charity organisation has recently moved to Moreton Bay and will continue to redefine what it means to be charitable in an empowering new space.

The Nest Community moved to Brendale in September 2023 after being based in Everton Park since 2015.

The move comes after The Nest Community CEO Roz Holt realised they needed more space to grow and evolve; moving from a 30 square metre space to 150 square metres.

"We are thrilled to have found a new home in Brendale, allowing us to expand our impact and empower even more women through craft. Our journey has been marked by resilience, community support, and a commitment to our core values," Roz says.

Founded in 2012, The Nest Community aims to provide a supportive and safe space to connect women to craft and allow them to be able to share their knowledge, skills and produce handmade items sustainably.

The Nest Community’s social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery has helped save more than 64 tonnes of craft resources from ending up in landfill since its beginning in 2019.

By 2022, The Nest Haberdashery was hosting more than 200 women per week, which is where the need for more space stemmed from.

“The Nest brand has always been synonymous with a home style setting, providing people with an experience akin to visiting Grandma’s house," Roz explains.

"But our business had outgrown residential zoning, and we needed a commercial space with a shed sized floor space, easy parking like a shopping centre with accessibility. Most importantly it needed to be a space where women felt safe and we could run skill sharing workshops."

Since the move to Brendale, The Nest Haberdashery has been busier than ever, with volunteers having diverted upwards of 11,000 metres of fabric and hosted 500 women per week between September and December 2023.

The Nest Community is currently looking for volunteers to join the haberdashery haven.

Monday-Friday, 10am-1pm (10am-2pm from February 5).
