Tropical Cyclone Alfred: Going door-to-door
Words by Nick Crockford

Emergency services are today door-knocking low-lying areas of Moreton Bay region which may be “flood impacted” by high tide and severe weather.

Police officers and SES staff have been speaking to residents in parts of Toorbul, Beachmere, Donnybrook, Meldale, Bribie, Clontarf, Griffin and Scarborough.

Those at risk of tidal flooding or isolation are being told to consider making plans to leave and be with family or friends in less vulnerable locations.

It comes as Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves closer to South-East Queensland raising “significant concerns” for City of Moreton Bay.

TC Alfred will bring heavy rain, damaging winds and flooding. Residents are urged to take the warnings seriously and prepare for a cyclone or flood.

Mayor Peter Flannery said: “City of Moreton Bay continues to monitor the evolving situation and is prepared.

“Please be assured our first priority is the safety of our community and staff.

“If winds get above 80kmh, it will become unsafe to move, and we will not be able to assist residents. So, I encourage people to make an emergency plan now.

“I am aware that many in the community are anxious and my advice to our residents is to use this time to prepare their homes.

“We encourage people to consider staying with family and friends if living in low lying or exposed areas, prone to flooding.”

The Moreton Bay Kids Festival, planned for Pine Rivers Park on Sunday, has been cancelled.

Sandbag stations: 13 stations are open in the City of Moreton Bay. Residents should only take what they need. Stocks are replenished from 7am-8pm.

Flooding: All low-lying coastal communities are vulnerable to an increased risk of high tides. When guidance on storm tide forecasts is released by BOM we will message vulnerable areas directly through MoretonAlert or if required Emergency Alert.

Resource Recovery centres: Council’s waste facilities are open. Green waste stations are free for people to prepare their property ahead of severe weather. Extended services include Ningi Transfer Station open this Wednesday and Toorbul Transfer Station open today and Wednesday.

Preparation: Drainage is being checked, beaches are being monitored, and shade sails and other structures are being assessed and removed where required.

Places of refuge: Will open for all, including people experiencing homelessness. These are places of emergency refuge. If at risk, residents are urged to stay with family or friends in less vulnerable locations. Council will inform residents of locations and when they open.
