Urgent appeal for foster homes

Moreton Bay residents are urged to consider being foster carers due to significant demand for children needing love and support in safe, stable homes.

It comes during Life Without Barriers’ Sharing is Caring Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers.

The campaign encourages people to find out more about foster caring in the Moreton Bay region, where the number of children needing care outweighs available carers.

Life Without Barriers’ Steven Mead has been talking to people in the community, putting up posters and passing out pamphlets to help spread the word.

He says many children are unable to live with their families for different reasons.

“We always need more carers, particularly here in the Moreton Bay region," Mr Mead said.

“It is so important that we find more foster carers who can provide a safe, stable, and loving home for these children.

“The love and support of a foster carer can help change the trajectory of a child’s life and have a big impact on their health and well being.”

“The more foster carers we can recruit, the more likely children will be able to stay close and connected to their family, community, and kin."

Options include providing short term, emergency and respite care. Carers can also be a single person, couple, same sex couple and of any age. Training and support is provided.

“We know people living in this region have big hearts,” Mr Mead said.

“If anyone feels like they have the capacity to support a child who needs some love, care and stability – through respite care, or short, medium or long-term care – we would love to hear from them.”
