Plans to transform public land at Petrie will start soon after the City of Moreton Bay awarded a contract for civil works.

The Lakes Precinct Activation at Moreton Bay Central (formerly The Mill) includes a series of waterside spaces, walking trails and features by the water’s edge.

It will provide attractions for visitors at the new Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Construction works for the project include:

  • A car park for 74 vehicles for visitors to the Lakes Precinct and Mill Waterpark.
  • Open spaces with picnic shelters, including a solar barbecue and landscaping.
  • A new lakefront 3km concrete paved walking track
  • Wayfinding signage and interpretative signage of site history, local fauna and flora.

Construction on the project is expected to start October 2025 with completion expected in mid-2026.

“Council is thrilled to progress the Lakes Precinct, which will provide world class green space for residents and visitors,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

Cr Jim Moloney (Div 8) said the project will “provide an inclusive environment for families, friends and community groups to gather and connect, while exploring the Old Mill site.”

The project is one of five under the $45.53 million SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund, that sees City of Moreton Bay, State and Federal Governments deliver a legacy for future generations.

“Our City plays an important role in the future prosperity, not only of South-East Queensland, but the entire state as we work to retain our liveability and affordability in the face of rapid population growth,” Mayor Flannery said.

“While this growth is Council’s single greatest challenge, this funding demonstrates when all levels of government work together, we can maintain and enrich the lifestyles of our current and future population.

“The project underscores our commitment to delivering a city of tomorrow that ensures residents can live, work and play in Moreton Bay.”
