Road closures across the Moreton Bay Region due to flooding
Words by Kylie Knight

Update 8.30pm: Moreton Bay Regional Council evacuation centres are open as we brace for a night of more heavy rain. Here's where they are mbrc.link/evacuation-centres

Southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway have been closed at King John Creek bridge, Caboolture. Traffic is being diverted to north bound bridge. Expect delays and avoid the area.

The Bruce Highway on ramp at Dohles Rocks Road is closed to traffic due to flash flooding.

Transport and Main Road Minister Mark Bailey is urging people to stay off the roads where possible.

“We’ve closed a 4.5km stretch of the Bruce Highway southbound at Caboolture due to flooding, and it’s expected to stay closed for 24 hours,” Mr Bailey says.

“This means traffic will be reduced to one lane each way for people travelling between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. This is expected to create significant delays, so we are asking people to avoid the area."

The Cedar Creek water level gauge near Cedar Creek Rd, Closeburn, is now at 5m. Residents are being told to expect major flooding, road closures and potential for isolation. They are being instructed to shelter in a safe place and to keep an eye on river rises via MoretonAlert.

If the rain is sustained throughout the afternoon, Moreton Bay Regional Council will be opening all its evacuation centres at 6pm. This is not because there’s likely to be a largescale event, but localised flooding will have enough impact in low-lying areas that residents will need to get to higher ground.

People should be stocked-up and prepared to stay at home if they can. If they’re in a flood prone area, they should be making alternative accommodation arrangements now.

BURPENGARY: Council is phoning people in Dale Street and Susan Court to advise that if current rainfall continues, they will need to evacuate later tonight. Flood levels have been rising in the upstream catchment of Dale St.

BOOROOBIN: There has been a landslip reported that is causing disruption to the road in that area. Council crews are currently responding.

There are more than 100 local roads closed across the Moreton Bay Region due to flooding. Council is monitoring Woodford, Bribie Island Rd, Dayboro, Kobble Creek, Cedar Creek and Caboolture Pumicestone Rd where floodwater is rising rapidly.

The Transport and Main Roads department is closing the D'Aguilar Highway west of Woodford and there may be closures on the northern side later today along the Stanley River. Drivers are being urged not to attempt to travel west of Woodford and the township is at risk of being cut off later today.

Council libraries remain open as refuge centres for anyone in need and, if the situation escalates, it will open its evacuation centres. They are prepared and on standby. Residents living in flood-prone areas are urged to subscribe to MoretonAlert to monitor river rises

Earlier today, a number of cars were reportedly stuck in floodwater on the D'Aguilar Highway at Stony Creek. Emergency Services crews helped the occupants safely exit their cars, according to a QFES spokeswoman.

Emergency services were also called to Old North Rd at Rocksberg at 5.20am after a car was discovered in floodwater. No occupants were found in the vehicle and police are investigating.

The incidents follows pleas from authorities for motorists not to drive in floodwater, after two deaths across the state in recent days.

A Flood Watch warning remains in place due to an upper low has moved slowly eastward across southern Queensland and will rotate over the southeast on Friday.

Heavy and intense rain is forecast with embedded thunderstorms. Catchments are wet, and likely to respond quickly to further rainfall.

River level rises are expected across the Flood Watch area, with widespread minor to moderate flooding. Isolated major flooding is possible with locally heavy rainfall.

Catchments likely to be affected include the Pine and Caboolture Rivers.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery says the number of roads closed will continue to rise today.

"With the rainfall from this morning and expected further rain in the afternoon and evening, now is the time for residents to reconsider their need to travel," he says.

"Be extremely cautious around frequently flooded roads and in our rural areas where creeks may rise rapidly and without warning. The risk of life-threatening flash flooding is real. The easiest way to stay safe is just to stay home.

"If anything goes wrong for you at home our Evacuation Centres are prepared to open in areas at risk and we are monitoring conditions closely throughout the region. Our Libraries are now open as places of refuge if you do need somewhere dry, or just need to use a computer and a phone. Refer to our Disaster Portal on our website for further information."

Phone 132 500 SES if you affected by flooding or rains and need assistance or phone 000 in an emergency.
