Southern Cross Catholic College is looking for “strong academic ability” and “excellent character” as applications open for its 2027 Academic Scholarships.
Up to 10 scholarships are available and awarded for Years 7-10 from the first year attending the College’s secondary campus in Scarborough.
Each scholarship is valued at $2500 per year, credited towards tuition fees and renewable annually through to Year 12.
The closing date for applicants to start in 2027, is Friday October 2, 2026. A scholarship exam is held in the same month.
“Successful applicants will demonstrate a genuine love of learning, a commitment to personal growth and a willingness to contribute positively to the life of the College,” Head of Secondary Campus Dr Conor Finn said.
“We value students who show integrity, resilience, leadership, kindness, a desire to make a difference, who will embrace our values of service, excellence and community.”
Dr Finn said the best preparation for the ACER examination, which is one part of the process, is “to continue developing good learning habits”.
“Read widely, practise problem solving, stay curious and approach your schoolwork with consistency and effort,” he said.
“We are equally interested in students who demonstrate strong character, resilience, a positive attitude towards learning and a commitment to contributing to their school and community.
“My advice is to do your best, believe in your abilities and see the experience as an opportunity to challenge yourself.”
Recipients of the scholarship will join a learning community which encourages students to thrive academically while growing as leaders and people of character.
Students have access to enriched learning opportunities, extension experiences and support of teachers who are committed to helping every learner achieve their potential.
“We believe education is about much more than academic success and are passionate about helping every student reach their full potential,” Dr Finn said.
“We want every young person to grow in knowledge, character and confidence while developing a strong sense of purpose and service to others.
“As a Catholic school in the Lasallian tradition, we nurture students spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally so they are well prepared for senior schooling and life beyond the classroom.”
Teachers identify academic potential through classroom performance, assessment data, observations and conversations with students to find strengths and areas for growth.
“We know success is not just about natural ability. Qualities such as curiosity, perseverance, resilience and a willingness to embrace challenges are equally important,” Dr Finn said.
“Through high-quality teaching, personalised support and meaningful feedback, we work with students to help them continually grow as learners.”
