The opening ceremony might not be until Friday, but competition begins today at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We have three locals in action today.

Results: Football, Teagan Micah

Australia 2 New Zealand 1

The Matildas have made a winning start to their Olympic Pool G campaign, dominating this match against New Zealand.

Former Redcliffe State High School student Teagan Micah was on the bench as substitute goalkeeper as Sam Kerr and Tameka Yallop scored in the first half.

The Matildas should have doubled their lead after the break and had a late scare when Gabi Rennie scored in injury time, but it was ultimately a consolation for New Zealand.

Australia are back in action on Saturday against Sweden, kick-off 6.30pm, who beat the US 3-0 today.

Results: Softball, Chelsea Forkin and Jade Wall

Japan 8 Australia 1

Not the start Australia Spirit wanted this morning with the host nation fired up in this opening match of the Tokyo Olympic tournament. Australia was dealt an 8-1 mercy rule defeat. After a close opening, Japan put daylight between the teams in the middle of the match and Spirit could not respond with the runs needed to close the gap.

Australia will be back in action tomorrow (July 22) when they face Italy starting at 4pm (AEST)

Softball - Chelsea Forkin and Jade Wall
