Things to see and do in Caboolture

History of Caboolture

The Caboolture area is the traditional home of the Kabi Aboriginal people. The name “Caboolture” is derived from the Kabi words meaning “Place of the carpet snake”.

In 1842, the Caboolture area was colonised by Europeans when the land around Moreton Bay was opened up to the free settlers. By 1867, a tiny settlement was established in Caboolture as a supply centre for settlers in the area and to service the needs of the miners travelling to Gympie to the goldfields. In 1879, the shire was constituted and in 1888 the railway line to Brisbane was opened.
